Dear Ministry Partners,
I don't know about you, but I sometimes succumb to the tyranny of the urgent. Society teaches us to make things happen and not wait on God. We then become independent of God. Jesus said, "I'm telling you this straight. The Son can't independently do a thing, only what he sees the Father doing. What the Father does, the Son does. The Father loves the Son and includes him in everything he is doing" (John 5:19, Message). God wants us to develop interdependence through prayer and seeking Him.
My will often deceives me in believing that I must be perfect or I am only as good as what I do. Christ says in John 5:30 (Message): I can't do a solitary thing on my own: I listen, then I decide. You can trust my decision because I'm not out to get my own way but only to carry out orders.
When I focus on self-effort and don't spend those extended hours Mon. morning in a quiet place, I can easily fall flat on my face: Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you'll recover your life. I'll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with mewatch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won't lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you'll learn to live freely and lightly (Matt. 11:28-30, Message).
Time with God allows me to experience God's power. The Spirit can make life. Sheer muscle and willpower don't make anything happen. Every word I've spoken to you is a Spirit-word, and so it is life-making. But some of you are resisting, refusing to have any part in this (John 6:63-64a, Message).
Recently, Karen and I started coordinating prayer efforts for a ministry called Great Kids Helping Great Kids. After doing summer projects like lemonade stands to raise money for the Peoples' City Mission, a great kid said, Now I know God is real. Before, I knew He was invisible.
